SmartBids Brings Power Hour to Penny Auctions

September 18, 2010
Penny auction site SmartBids has decided to take its auctions up a notch by introducing “power hour”. The power hour, which starts each day at 9 PM Eastern Standard Time and ends at 10 PM Eastern Standard Time, is an uninterrupted hour of timed auctions without any reserves.

Having opened only four months ago, SmartBids has become one of the most popular lowest unique bids penny auction sites. SmartBids, just as the name implies, rewards bidders for bidding smart. Although conventional penny auction sites reward bidders for spending the most cash, SmartBids takes penny auctions into a whole new direction. Goods and products up for auction are bid for within the usual penny to a dollar range. The bidder with the lowest unique bid takes home the prize.

SmartBid guides users by dropping hints and e-mail updated to make bidding both fun and interactive. Each bid costs only 75 cents, encouraging multiple attempts for persistent and loyal bidders. SmartBid users who participate in these special lowest unique bid auctions will also receive equal reward credits which can be used in standard auctions.

But now, SmartBids’ power hour puts a whole new spin on things. Unlike the usual lowest unique bid auctions that close after a certain number of bids, auctions that occur during power hour close within a predetermined amount of time. The bidder with the lowest unique bid when the timer runs out is declared a winner.

As the timer counts down, thirty more seconds is added to the timer once a new bid is entered. If to timer contains less than thirty seconds at any moment during the auction, every new bid will simply reset the clock to thirty seconds.

To encourage new bidders to try out SmartBid’s power hour, they are handing out 10% extra free bids. Bidders can avail of it by entering the coupon code “Power” and gain access to special power hour auctions.

With many companies competing to enter the penny auction market, there will be fewer and fewer winners. With new sites opening up all the time the penny auction pie is becoming smaller and smaller and anyone looking to jump in on this supposed cash cow is assuredly mistaken. With many auctions not making it past there 6 month mark, the question has to be asked is it worth it to open another auction? And apparently the answer is starting to become a resounding “NO”. With established penny auctions like Bidstick and Swoopo accounting for much of the “Penny Auction” craze most penny auctions or even unique lowest bid auctions that open up will not see the same amount of success as there would be counterparts. Unless there is some dramatic difference from just another swoopo clone being released most penny auctions will be akin to a red headed cousin that gets no respect or love.

Smartbid.com will be opening soon and we would love to hear from the company or from users as to there experiences with or in the site.
