Calling itself the ‘most exciting auction site on the web’, 5050auctions.com a variety of items, ranging from cookware, home appliances, to the latest must-have gadgets. Auctions however, are quite limited, and the last time we checked, the site only had 8 live auctions. From the activity we’ve observed on the site, it looks like winning may be difficult, especially for the penny auction ‘newbie’.
After registering on 5050auctions, members immediately get 5 free bids which allow them to explore the site and see how things work. They can then purchase bid packs, which come in bundles of 10 to 500, if they want to “play”.
Each bid placed on an item increases its price by only $0.01, but instead of timer increments, the auction’s timer countdown clock, which varies from auction to auction, resets after each bid. If it’s a high-value item like Apple’s new iPad, the countdown timer can easily be as long as 2 minutes. Again, this makes winning quite difficult. We would’ve preferred the timer to no longer reset after reaching a specific time, like 30 or 40 seconds.
A unique feature of 5050’s auctions is that once the item price reaches $0.50, it stops there, and only the last bidder’s name and countdown change. This means that winning bidders will never have to pay above 50 cents for an item they’ve won.
The only thing they’ll be paying for is shipping, which costs $10.00 for all items, whether it’s an iPod, or an HDTV. 5050 Auctions promises to deliver your won item as soon as they receive the payment for it, with items arriving at your doorstep in less than a week.
The site has been accused of shilling and using bots, although none have presented solid proof with regards to these allegations.
