It’s safe to say that everyone who surfs the net knows what eBay is. The online shopping company is one of the few forces that shaped how the internet works today. With more than 90 million registered and active members coming from all corners of the globe, eBay is hands down, the largest online marketplace today.
Practically anything and everything can be found on eBay, from the hottest gadgets, luxury goods, to odd items that are only appreciated by a few select circles. Whatever you can think of, no matter how crazy you think it is, it’s very likely that eBay has it up for auction.
To give you a picture of how huge eBay currently is, the company sold a total of $60 billion worth of goods in 2009. If you do the math, that’s around $2,000 per second. That’s a lot of money moving around in a wickedly fast pace.
How has eBay become such as successful site, you might ask? As I said earlier, eBay plays host to a ridiculously wide variety of items and products – this makes it very appealing to all people with different interests. If you’re an art collector, then go ahead and look for paintings. If you want to buy a rare baseball card, then eBay is probably the place for you to be.
This healthy mix of items that are both popular and esoteric is one the keys to eBay’s success. The fact that virtually anyone can sign up and sell whatever’s in the garage doesn’t hurt either. Indeed, being a member on the site is as easy as counting 1, 2, 3.
While fraud is still a possibility on eBay, eBay Inc. has took steps to combat this problem, most notably through the purchase of PayPal. With PayPal, users are provided a secure way of paying for their purchases.
