AuctionStorm.com is another new penny auction site that seemingly came out of nowhere. While the site’s traffic is somewhat on the low side, the items they have up for grabs are quite impressive. Auction Storm boasts of a variety of items ranging from gift cards, luxury watches, video games, to DLSR cameras, and a host of other electronic gadgets.
Auction Storm uses the same auction format employed by most penny auctions today. Auctions start at $0.00, and each bid placed on an item raises its price by increments of 1, 3, 5, and 7 cents. This will vary from auction to auction, and it seems that the higher the value of the item, the larger the increments will be.
Each bid placed on an item also raises its auction timer by 30 seconds. Unfortunately, the site hasn’t placed a limitation on timer increments, unlike other penny auctions that disable timer increases once it reaches a specific time – usually 30 to 40 seconds. This eliminates what many people call “sniper bidding,” or bidders who jump in at the 11th hour to steal a win.
Bids on the other hand, are priced at 60 cents apiece, but this could easily be lower if a member purchases more bids. Bids are sold in packs of 30 to 1000.
As always, the last bidder before the time runs out wins the auction. He, or she, can then purchase the item for the final price.
So now for our own observations. As we pointed out earlier, AuctionStorm.com’s traffic is low due to being a relatively new site. But here’s where it gets odd. We noticed that “people” still continue to bid on all auctions after 12 midnight or so. Now, for large sites like Swoopo, Beezid and Bidcactus, that’s fine. But the site’s traffic and “activity” don’t seem to match up.
Another negative we see is shipping, which is really expensive on the site. Shipping for a single gift cards is priced at around $10, while a pair of headphones will be shipped for $20. Those are some of the steepest rates around – probably the most expensive even.
